The Dialectical Relationship of the Self to Society

Society and individuals feed off one another. In the Frontline video, the main objective was to show how the consumer and advertiser’s ideas and reactions played off of one another. The video showed me how they create a complete circle with the media and the consumer. The media sells people images of themselves (internalization) and in return the people aspire to be like the media (externalization). It all is just a vicious circle. I agree that the “feedback loop” appears to be on the right track. Being a teenage girl, I have seen several fads that have been the huge rage for a couple months and then all of the sudden be out of date and you don’t see it again for several years. Individuals influence the marketers and they influence everyone else. If human nature wasn’t so dependent on conformity and fitting in, the cycle wouldn’t be so very affective.
